Bevel gears are used extensively in a wide variety of industries and mechanical operations due to the most important advantage they offer: smooth and low-noise power transmission between non-parallel shafts at almost any angle or speed. Bevel Gears come in pairs, with both gears having differing numbers of teeth. They can have straight or spiral (curved oblique) teeth, but always feature a conical formed, pitched surface. Bevel Gears can have outward ( external ) or inward ( internal ) facing tooth. As Bevel Gear pairs are never identical they are supplied in matched remaining and right-handed pairs.

Bevel gears are those that use two conical toothed wheels to transfer power between axes that are cut within the same space; however, hypoid gears can transfer power between two axes that cross each other.

Tooth of a bevel gear can be either straight or spiraled, which is also known as a conical helix. Different types of gears can be classified based on their tooth width, but also on the tooth face width or the center's circular pitch.
